Description

Marlborough Buildings comprises five houses, numbers 30 to 34, forming the right-hand end of a symmetrical terrace overlooking Royal Victoria Park to the rear. The buildings date to circa 1789. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with double-pitched slate mansard roofs, featuring paired dormers and moulded stacks to the coped party walls.

The buildings are three storeys with attics and basements, presenting a three-window front to the street. Architectural details include a continuous coped parapet, cornice, lintel frieze, upper floor sill bands, and a ground floor platband. The ground floor is chamfered and rusticated with radial voussoirs, and has a plinth. Originally, all the houses had six-pane sash windows. Semicircular arches originally featured over the doors to the right of each house, though all but number 34, the right-hand end, now have later projecting porches with parapets, cornices, moulded architraves, and consoles over the doors. Number 30 features a single-storey porch and balconettes to two first-floor windows on the left. Number 31 has a low, three-storey porch, rusticated to the ground floor, and plate glass sash windows to the two left-hand bays. Number 32 has a single-storey porch. Number 33 is similar to number 32, also with some plate glass windows. Number 34 has a two-window range with balconettes to the upper floor windows.

The interiors have not been inspected, except in number 32, which retains a fine original deep frieze decorated with urns and bouquets.
