Description

The Railway Hotel, formerly known as Chapmans, is a hotel and public house located at 27 Railway Approach in Worthing. Built around 1900, it features some alterations and extensions from the late 20th century. The building is designed in a Vernacular Revival style, constructed of red brick in English bond, with timber-framed gables, plastered infill, and a tiled roof topped with tall brick chimneystacks.

The most notable architectural feature is a three-storey octagonal corner turret crowned with an ogee-shaped tiled dome and a finial. The entrance to the Public Bar is through an arched doorcase. The elevation facing Station Approach has four gables, one of which projects, and includes two single doors and two double doors, with frosted glass in all ground floor windows.

On the Oxford Road elevation, there is one gable with timber-framing, a six-light window on the second floor, a four-light window on the first floor, and two half-glazed doors along with two windows. All these features have cambered heads, stained glass fanlights with leaf decorations, and frosted glass windows. A late 20th-century conservatory has been added to the rear.

Inside, the public bar retains a lincrusta ceiling, two Tuscan columns painted to resemble marble, mahogany dado panelling, and a wooden partition with engraved glass panels. There is also a large wooden clock, a tiled fireplace, a bar fitment with round-headed arches, and an original counter with floor tiling in front. The staircase hall features a well staircase with widely spaced balusters.
