Description

Rowfant House is an L-shaped mansion, now used as an old people's home. The building’s origins lie in a 15th-century structure, the western end of the south front, which was subsequently refaced with ashlar in the 16th century. The original section is two storeys and has an attic in gabled form, with five windows. It features a Horsham slab roof, with gables at each end that have projecting bays below. A two-storey gabled porch is centrally positioned and all three gables are crowned with kneelers and ball finials at the apex and above the kneelers, accompanied by casement windows. An addition of two window bays was added to the east in 1848, followed by a ground floor section extending beyond this, characterized by two window bays with gables and an obtusely-pointed archway. The west front of the house dates from 1759 and is constructed of red brick, featuring twelve windows. The 15th-century portion displays a crown-post roof, while the 16th century is marked by fireplaces and 17th-century panelling.
