Description
Simmonds Cottage is a house dating from around 1580 to 1620, which was refronted in the early 19th century. It features 20th-century windows and extensions to the northeast and northwest that match the original style and incorporate some old materials. The cottage is timber-framed, with a painted brick ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor, while square framing is visible on the south elevation. It has a tiled roof with a tall external brick chimney stack to the west, where some exposed timber can be seen behind it. The house has two storeys and two windows, with 20th-century casements.
Inside, the cottage retains its exposed frame with curved tension braces on the first floor. The ground floor includes a chamfered spine beam and floor joists marked by carpenters. There is an open fireplace featuring a bread oven, a salt shelf, and a ham smoking platform above. A large section of wattle and daub is preserved next to the main chimney, along with remnants of sockets for window mullions and split lath and daub in the west wall. There is also a further inglenook to the north and a stone-lined well in the southwest corner.
