Description
Old Coombe House is a house believed to have originally been built as an iron master's residence and later converted into a farmhouse. This late 16th century timber-framed building had its roof raised in the 18th century when it was also refronted. The ground floor is constructed of brick in stretcher bond, while the first floor features tall tile hanging. The roof is covered with old peg tiles and has a tall multiflue brick chimney stack on the left side, dating from the late 16th century. The house is two storeys high and has five windows, predominantly featuring 20th century casements, with a 19th century metal-framed casement on the ground floor. A central 20th century gabled brick porch leads to a modern panelled door with sidelights. The side elevation retains some exposed box framing on the ground floor. Inside, there are two large sandstone inglenook fireplaces with moulded wooden bressummers and brick backs, along with alcoves, exposed framing with curved tension braces, and a large chamfered spine beam. The interior also includes plank doors and a section of splat balustrading above the staircase.
