Description

The south boundary wall to the Mansion House, The Tower House, Orchard House, and The Beeches, including the gate house, is a garden boundary wall with a small attached gate house. It dates from the 18th century and was partly heightened in the early 19th century. The wall is constructed of knapped coursed flints with red brick details, including exposed brick base courses, brick lacing courses, crenellations, capping, and gatejambs.

This wall forms the southern boundary to the gardens of The Mansion House, No 74 High Street (The Tower House), and The Orchard House and The Beeches in West Furlong Lane, all of which were originally part of the grounds of The Mansion House. The wall consists of two lengths separated by the gateway to The Tower House. The taller, western length is approximately 3.00 meters high, capped in brick with widely spaced brick crenellations, and features a short but higher return at the southwest angle of the grounds built over a brick arched recess. The eastern length of the wall has a heavy weathered brick capping that projects over a brick dentil course.

The small gate house located to the west of the gateway is taller than the wall and has a hipped tiled roof, with a tile-hung south wall that has an opening fitted with a wooden shutter. The wall and gate house are listed for their group value in West Furlong Lane, formerly known as West Foreland Lane.
