Description

The Ruins of Old Slaugham Place are located in the grounds of Slaugham Manor. This site features the remnants of a house built in the late 16th century or early 17th century by Sir Walter Covert, designed by John Thorpe. Originally, the house formed a complete courtyard, but it was largely demolished in the 18th century. During this period, the staircase was removed and relocated to the Star Inn in Lewes, where it is now part of the Lewes Town Hall. The principal remains include portions of two towers, part of the kitchen and hall, and three round-headed doorways. Slaugham Manor itself was constructed by Walter Tower in 1901 at a distance from the old site. The garden is bordered by the stone walls of the ruins.
