Description
Orchard House, Lindens, and Bowes Wood is a large house, now subdivided, built for Sir Samuel Cunard in 1907 when it was known as Orchards. The architect is unknown but the style is reminiscent of J D Coleridge, a pupil of Lutyens. The building is constructed in a Jacobean style that closely copies Sackville College in East Grinstead.
The complex consists of three principal sections: Orchard House and Lindens form the main house, while Bowes Wood, originally the servants' quarters, comprises the L-shaped wing. The south elevation is of sandstone, while the north elevation and Bowes Wood are timber-framed with plaster infill. The building has a tiled roof with ribbed brick chimneys, two storeys and attics, and is topped with a central square shingled turret featuring an octagonal belvedere.
The south front displays ten stone mullioned windows. Two gabled dormers pierce the roof, and there are central and side projecting two-storey gables with coping and kneelers (the original finials have been removed). The central gable features a sundial, a five-light stone mullioned window, and a round-headed doorcase with keystone and impost blocks, pilasters, sidelights, and oak panelled doors. The side wings have lozenge decoration to the gables, with five-light mullioned windows to the first floor and six-light mullioned windows to the ground floor. The east gable is timber-framed, while the west gable is of stone, retaining its finials and featuring a stone doorcase.
The north front has two projecting stone gables with the ground floor in stone and close-studded timber framing above. Two gabled dormers are present. The central gable features six-light mullioned and transomed windows with cambered heads and a round-headed doorway with keystone and impost blocks. Bowes Wood is timber-framed on a sandstone plinth, with an old tiled roof, three clustered brick stacks, and five gabled dormers. It has five mullioned casements with oak surrounds and iron cames, a gabled extension, and a porch to the left-hand side.
A gardeners' hut, timber-framed to the south with casement windows and an oak door with decorative hinges and weatherboarded behind, is attached to the west end of Lindens.
Interior features are notable for their mixture of original materials and those incorporated during the 1907 construction. Lindens' ground floor room, formerly the Library or Study, contains a reused chamfered spine beam and reused chamfered floor jambs with run-out stops. The room is lined with probably genuine early 17th-century oak plank and muntin panelling. The fireplace recess features an early 17th-century style four-centred stone fireplace with high stops, and 1907 wooden settle ends.
The former dining room has plaster panelling, a 1907 roll-moulded cornice, and a ceiling incorporating reused timbers probably from a barn. A corner fireplace appears to be 18th-century in date, with a wooden frieze depicting a central tree flanked by ruins, a shepherd and his dog in 18th-century costume to the left, escaping sheep to the right, and ewers in the corners. The corridor contains reused chamfered beams.
The first-floor principal bedroom has a fireplace recess with brick chimney and a reused bressumer with Arts and Crafts style settle ends below. Another bedroom features an early 20th-century corner fireplace with console brackets and egg-and-dart moulding. The attic contains fine plank doors in early 17th-century style. According to sales particulars, the interior of Orchard House includes an original drawing room and morning room with panelling and fireplaces in similar style. Bowes Wood contains a series of plank doors in 17th-century style.
