Description
Constitutional Buildings is a late 19th-century municipal hall that stands five storeys tall and is constructed of ashlar stone. The main facade faces north and features a central projecting wing topped with a gable. There is a central arched doorway flanked by a rounded arch opening on the first floor, which leads to a blank recess behind it. Above, on the upper floor, there is a three-light mullioned window with semi-circular heads. To the left, there is a gabled bay with a four-light mullioned window on the first floor and a similar window above, but with a large central arched light. The right side of the building is simpler, with plain mullioned windows. The west elevation also has a gable, while the east side features a large stack that has been partially removed. Both side elevations include string courses that do not continue onto the main facade. The ground floor has shop fronts, and the building is topped with a tiled roof. Its prominent location at the junction of London Road and High Street adds to its significance. Constitutional Buildings is part of a group that includes Constitution Hall, The Fountain, and Nos 4 to 12 Middle Row.
