Description

This is a barn located approximately 100 metres to the north-west of Field Place. Dated by dendrochronological survey to around 1470-1480, it was likely built by John Mitchell, who acquired Field Place between 1482 and 1485. The barn originally featured crown posts, but these were removed, and angled queen struts and through purlins were added during the 16th and 18th centuries when two additional bays were constructed at the south-east end.

The barn is timber-framed and consists of five bays, with four bays dating to 1470-1480 and an end bay that is set at right angles and divided into two bays from the 16th century. The exterior is weatherboarded and sits on a brick and stone plinth. The roof was originally covered with Horsham stone slabs, which are now on a nearby house from the 1930s, but it currently has a corrugated asbestos covering.

The earlier part of the barn features jowled posts, a midrail, and a series of passing braces in the wall plate. One visible scarf joint is of the 'edge-halved' type with face pegs, along with two bridled butts with edge pegs. The original pegged rafters are complemented by 18th-century angled queen struts and through purlins, with 20th-century diagonal struts nailed onto the rafters. The north-west bay likely has a 20th-century floor with concertina bracing. The 16th-century addition is framed separately at right angles to the earlier structure and contains two bays. This framing includes a midrail, curved braces to the wall frame, a jowled central post, and a queen post roof with a collar beam, along with pegged rafters and a 20th-century inserted ridgepiece. There is also a partially inserted floor in this section.
