Description
Hedgecocks Cottage is a house dating from around 1500, originally designed as a two-bay open hall-house. A chimney was added at the western end, and a floor was inserted in the larger bay during the mid-17th century. The cottage was refronted in the late 18th century and features a lean-to extension on the west side, along with a large extension to the east that dates from the 20th century.
The building is timber-framed, with the flame-exposed south side showcasing a midrail and curved tension braces at the ends. The infill is either brick or plastered. It has a tiled roof with a tall brick chimney stack at the western end. The cottage has two storeys and two windows, featuring 19th-century casements. The north side was refronted in brickwork in the late 18th century and is now painted. The ground floor has 19th-century triple casements with cambered arches, and the central doorcase has been blocked. A plinth runs along the base of the building.
Inside, there is a 17th-century open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, a bread oven with a stokehole beneath, and a spice niche. The western side has beams with lambstongue stops, and the roof includes clasped side-purlins. Hedgecocks Cottage is listed for its special interest in the pre-20th-century work.
