Description

The former barn at Christ's Hospital is a building that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and was later adapted for use as a granary or mill. It has undergone some modifications in the late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed with five bays, featuring pebbledashed infill in the upper part and brown brick cladding in the lower part, primarily in Sussex bond, with a base in English bond. The roof is gabled and tiled, with the north gable covered in weatherboarding.

On the exterior, the east side displays a visible midrail, a box frame above, and a pattern of curved tension braces. The lower parts of the upright posts can be seen on either side of the central bay, which originally served as a cart entrance; this frame is a 19th-century addition made of thin scantling. There are five small 19th-century casement windows with leaded lights positioned near the top of the wallplate. Below the midrail, there are two larger 19th-century casements, one sliding and one pivoting, along with an entrance featuring a plank door and two large late 19th-century sliding industrial doors. The north side includes two tension braces, one of which is ogee-shaped, and an original mullioned opening. The south and west sides are not visible from the outside due to the late 19th-century granary/mill complex built next to it.

Internally, all upright posts and tension braces above the midrail are intact. The roof features three angled queen struts and one queen post, along with a complete set of pegged rafters that do not include a ridgepiece. A 19th-century inserted floor, supported by metal joists and cast iron columns, is present, and the first floor has a wooden partition from the 19th century.

Historically, this barn is depicted as a detached structure on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map, and the alterations likely took place in the late 19th century.
