Description

Christ's Hospital comprises a complex of buildings constructed in the early 20th century after the school relocated from London to Stammerham in 1902. The design is by Sir Aston Webb, executed in red brick and reflecting a Tudor style. The layout is dominated by a central quadrangle, flanked by colonnaded wings and containing a Dining Hall to the north and a Big School to the south. Extending from the north side of the 8 blocks is a slight convex curve containing 2 boarding-houses each. Eight H-shaped blocks are arranged around this quadrangle, four on each side of the Dining Hall. Each block is three stories high, with ten windows to the south front and three windows to the inner sides of the wings, and features gables projecting from the wings and the courtyards they form. A balustraded parapet runs between the gables. Stone doorways are positioned centrally within each courtyard, each surmounted by a bay window. The ground floor of the wings facing the south features large four-light windows with stone pilasters between the window lights.

The Dining Hall, forming the north side of the quadrangle, has five large bays with immense five-light windows arranged in seven tiers. Four round-headed arches between the bays contain two-light windows in three tiers. A tall water tower rises behind the Dining Hall. The Big School, at the south end of the quadrangle, has nine bays with Perpendicular style windows, a gabled end flanked by octagonal turrets, and a square clock tower. Square blocks connect to the Big School via wide, rusticated arches with balustrades. The Wren portico, originally from the school in Newgate Street, London, was re-erected on the south side of the Big School.

The east and west wings of the quadrangle are two stories high with fourteen windows each, having end projections joined by a colonnaded walkway with a balustrade. Gables top the end projections and the centre of each side, with a statue positioned beneath each gable. The Chapel, within the west wing, contains panels by Sir Frank Brangwin. The side buildings are linked to the Dining Hall via colonnades with archways, which are themselves re-erected elements from the former London school, designed by John Shaw in 1836, one of which bears an inscription. Iron gates and stone pillars, also from the original Newgate Street school, mark the entrance to the grounds from the Horsham Road.
