Description

Brunswick Place is a terrace of houses built around 1820, set back from London Road and stepped uphill. The terrace comprises numbers 43 to 59 (odd). The houses are three storeys high, with one window each, except number 47, which has two. Numbers 57 and 59 have blocked window spaces. The facades are stuccoed, with the ground floor rusticated. Fluted Corinthian pilasters extend from the first to the second floor, and from the ground floor to the second floor at the ends of the terrace. A cornice and parapet tops the building. Most of the sash windows retain their original glazing bars. Several Victorian bay windows have been added to the ground floor, and modern shop fronts project from numbers 43 to 49. Number 55 features a moulded doorway recessed between a pair of tapered Doric half-columns. A stretched porch, supported by two Doric fluted columns, two pilasters, and a central curved bracket, serves the paired doors of numbers 57 and 59. Number 59 also has palmettes on the stringcourses. Numbers 43 to 59 (odd) are considered to form a distinct group.
