Description

The City Walls are an important historical structure, likely built before the end of the 2nd century AD, with bastions added by the mid-4th century AD. The walls have an irregular polygon shape with eleven facets. Remnants of Roman construction can be seen at the base of the existing wall and in the earth ramparts. There are also medieval and later alterations, which are more piecemeal in nature. In the 18th century, a rampart promenade was constructed, and four city gates were dismantled between 1772 and 1783.
