Description

Chidmere House is an L-shaped house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations and additions made around 1930. The original structure is built of red brick, featuring one timber-framed wall to the north that is exposed with flint infill. The roof is tiled, and the gable to the east has kneelers and contains an attic window. The north front showcases a 4-light 16th-century mullioned window, which was reglazed in 1930. There is a Tudor staircase gable with a 16th-century round-headed window and a flint gable to the right, also from around 1930. Other windows were replaced around the same time. The south end of the south wing was reconstructed in 1930, and additions were made to the northwest and west of the building, with a further small brick addition to the west in 1954.

Inside, the hall features stone flags, while the dining room has 17th-century panelling that was installed in the 1930s from a house in Chichester, along with an inglenook fireplace. There is a timber partition, plastered over wattle and daub, separating the hall from the dining room. The hall and dining room have exposed ceiling beams. Beyond the dining room, the book room contains some old panelling from another part of the house, reassembled in the 1930s. Some panelling that was sold from the house in 1912 was believed to be dated 1521, which is likely the original date of the house.
