Description

The Public Library was originally the Older School, founded by Sir William Older in 1682 and rebuilt by W G K Gratwicke in 1853, with architecture by S S Teulon. This L-shaped Gothic building is constructed from squared knapped flints, featuring red brick dressings, quoins, and a diaper pattern. It has a slate roof and casement windows. The west wing, likely the original Schoolmaster's house, has two storeys with two windows facing west. It includes a gable displaying the date 1853 and two pointed windows with two lights each. The south front features a tower with a hipped roof and a bell-turret above. To the east, there is an L-shaped wing of one storey, which has three windows facing south and three facing west.
