Description
The Woking War Memorial, located at All Saints Church, is a First World War memorial that takes the form of a wooden cross with a canopy, both set on a stone plinth. At the center of the cross is a bronze figure of Christ crucified. Surrounding the base of the cross are four square blocks inscribed with the names of twenty-seven casualties from the Great War. The entire structure stands on a square stone slab.
The memorial was erected at a cost of £228 and dedicated on 10th July 1920, designed by Inigo Triggs. In 2004, it received a grant from English Heritage for repairs after suffering damage due to vandalism, which included the replacement of the damaged cross, bronze figure of Christ, and canopy.
War memorials hold significant historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels. This simple yet poignant calvary was established to honor the local men who lost their lives in the First World War.
