Description
The Hall monument, located approximately 7 metres south of the south transept of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, is a chest tomb dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from ashlar stone and designed in a Neo-Classical style. The monument features a large base stone with a roll-moulded edge and is supported by free-standing Tuscan columns at each corner, all resting on deep plinths. An entablature with a panelled frieze, which breaks forward over the columns, and a lid with a triple roll-moulded edge complete the structure. Between the columns are incised panels—two on each longer side and one on each shorter side—bearing commemorative inscriptions for various children of John Hall and Elizabeth Grinham, with the earliest recorded death in 1810. The monument previously had a railed enclosure and was covered in ivy at the time of the last survey.
