Description

Munstead Place is a house built between 1891 and 1892, with hoppers dated 1899, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Gertrude Jekyll. The lower part of the house is constructed of coursed and snecked Bargate stone, with half-timbering and rendered infill above, and plain tiled roofs. There are tall brick stacks to the gable ridges on the left and right, and to the front right of centre.

The front elevation features a triple gabled design, with the larger gables at the ends. The left-hand gable has diagonal framing, the centre has close studding, and the right-hand gable is similarly styled. It has wood-framed, leaded casement windows with one window to each gable on the first floor, sheltered by pentice drip mouldings. The windows are 12-light on the outer gables and 8-light in the centre. The ground floor has irregular window placement, with one window in a pentice extension to the left, and one in each outer gable. A moulded bressumer runs across the ground floor. A brick-lined porch recess is centrally located, with a ribbed and studded door in flanking lights, with bottle glass glazing, and braced posts to the entrance.

The return front on the right side of the house faces a formal garden, featuring a two-windowed, half-timbered range and a gabled bay at the right end, connected to tile-hung extensions to the right, which extend across the rear. The left return front has a gable bay in the centre with an attic window, one 8-light window on the first floor, and one 10-light window below. A large window spans the ground floor on the right, with a gabled dormer above.

Inside, a Classical style staircase is present. The gardens were originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
