Description
Munstead House is a house built between 1877 and 1878 by architect J. J. Stevenson for Gertrude Jekyll and her mother, with the drawing room remodeled by Sir Edwin Lutyens around 1900. The building is constructed of coursed and snecked sandstone blocks with ashlar dressings and features both plain tiled and machine tiled roofs. It has two storeys on the left, one storey and attics in the centre, and two storeys with an attic in the gable bay on the right, along with single storey extensions to the right. There are end ridge stacks to the left and front stacks on both the left and right.
The entrance front has a basement plinth and a gabled bay that projects to the right. The fenestration consists of irregular glazing-bar sash windows, with two windows under the eaves on the first floor to the left and three windows across the ground floor. There are three through-eaves sash dormers in the centre range under gable pediments, with two sashes between the floors that light the staircase to the left. To the right, there is one ground floor sash window under a cornice hood. The gable on the projecting range to the right has two attic windows, with one sash window on each floor below, both under cornice hoods and featuring moulded sills. The entrance door is made of six panels and is located to the left of centre, under a transom light with ten panes and a smooth ashlar panel above. It has a flat hood supported by fluted scroll brackets and five steps leading up to it. There are 20th century extensions to the left and Lutyens' extensions set back to the right.
On the garden front, the main range to the right has two square bays with alternating recesses, wood cornices, and two sash windows on each floor of each bay, along with one sash window between the bays on each floor. A lower range is set back to the left and features a wooden square bay in the centre, with a "Venetian" window on the first floor of the bay and a tripartite plate glass sash window below. There is a hip-roofed single storey range to the left with arched double doors and keystoned surrounds. The upper attic floor has been removed, and the stacks have been truncated.
The interior includes a Jacobean fireplace designed and built by Gertrude Jekyll, and the original dining room decoration was carved by Sir Herbert Jekyll.
