Description
The Pontife Monument is a chest tomb located approximately 40 meters north-east of the north chapel of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Godalming. It dates from around 1830 and is constructed of ashlar stone in a Neo-Classical style. The tomb features a roll-moulded base stone and a plinth. Attached Tuscan columns support an entablature, and the lid is segmental-sectioned with segmental pediments at both ends and the center of each long side, all adorned with fans in the tympana. Each side has a pulvinated oval panel with a fluted edge and fans in the spandrels, while the panels on the longer sides are flanked by columns with rustication on either side. The inscription on the south panel commemorates 'Sarah the beloved wife of Mr Edmund Pontife x London', who died in 1830, although the rest of the inscription is worn. At the time of the survey, the north-west column had fallen, and the monument was covered in ivy.
