Description

Sollys Mill is a former hosiery factory built in the early 1870s. The building is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond, partly resting on a plinth of rubblestone, with brick quoins and a chamfered brick top course. It features a Welsh slate roof and stands three storeys tall with a layout of eight by two bays.

On the ground floor, the bays are divided by columns that support a fascia board and cornice. The ground floor windows are three-light transomed small-pane windows, with the right bay bricked up. The first and second floors are defined by pilasters, featuring sixteen-pane windows on the first floor and eight-pane windows above, all set in reveals with projecting sills and segmental brick arches. The roof is hipped, with a broad stack located at the left end.

At the rear, each ground floor bay has a recess with a tall window at the front, with the lower sections infilled (except for the second window from the left). The upper windows maintain the same style as before. The second bay from the left has reinforced glass in the lower windows and a second-floor fire door in what was previously a window. The third bay from the left has blocked ground and second-floor windows, along with a second-floor fire door. To the right of the centre, there is a two-storey pent-roofed outshut with a first-floor loading door and window, and a four-panel door on the right return, along with a one-storey outshut on the left return.

The returns feature a blind ground floor, except for a segment-arched doorway on the left return, with narrow windows above four-pane sashes on the first floor and two-pane sashes on the second floor.

This building served as an early steam-powered hosiery factory, although the engine house and stack have since been removed.
