Description

Flat Nos 1 and 2 Manor Farm and Manor Farm Day Centre is a building that serves as two flats and a day centre for senior citizens, originally a farmhouse. It may date back to the 16th century or earlier, featuring a possible open hall with a chimney stack added in the late 16th century. The building was refronted in 1822, restored in the mid-20th century, and has a mid-20th-century extension to the south, which is not of special interest.

The structure is timber framed but completely encased in brick, with a brick chimney stack on the front elevation and red brick with grey headers on the north elevation. It has a steeply pitched roof with large gablets, now covered with modern tiles. The building is two storeys high and has six windows. The two northernmost windows are 16-pane sashes, while the others are mid-19th century six-paned sashes. The doorcase features a flat wooden cornice with brackets and a six-panelled door, with the top four panels glazed and later covered by wooden paint.

Inside, the ground floor retains part of a massive spire beam, along with a wooden beam decorated with painted spiral designs and some panels of painted plaster depicting a stag and fishscale decorations, likely from the 16th century but not in their original location. The roof was not accessible during the survey but is said to still have old timbers. The framing has been completely boxed in with plasterboard, but its shape is typical of an open hall house. The local council is reported to retain additional panels of painted plaster that originated from this building.
