Description

No. 72 High Street is a butcher's shop with accommodation above, dating from the mid-19th century. The shop front was updated in the late 19th to early 20th century and underwent further alterations in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of yellow brick in irregular Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys high and features three bays.

On the ground floor, there are modern plate-glass shop windows on either side of a half-glazed double shop door. Below the windows are colorful tile panels, and tiled pilasters flank the door. Above the windows and door are vertical metal-grilled ventilation panels, along with a modern fascia board. The end pilasters are boarded and topped with fluted corbels, supporting an awning. The first and second floors have 1980s two-pane windows, with the second floor windows being shorter and a blind nine-pane sash window in the center, all set under flat brick arches. A plat band runs along the second floor, and the hipped roof has a stack on the left side.

Inside, the shop features a very fine interior with colored tiles on the rear and side walls. There is a brown-tile dado and a colorful band below yellow tile panels, which are painted with images of cattle and pigs, bordered with multi-colored tiles and a vine trail frieze. Projecting from the rear wall is a full-height canted bay with a pay counter flanked by narrow minors. This bay has a leaded overlight that includes some stained glass and a central pane painted with a rural scene. The shop front and interior are notable for their unusual survival and represent a fine example of their type.
