Description

Highland Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 16th century, with later alterations and extensions from the 16th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame on a rendered plinth, with whitewashed roughcast cladding and 20th-century tile hanging above. The roof is plain-tiled and half-hipped, with end gablets.

The cottage has a three-bay lobby entry plan that includes remnants of an earlier house. It stands two storeys tall, with stacks located to the right of center and at the left end. There are two gabled dormers, the larger one in the center, both fitted with diamond-pane glazing. The ground floor has four windows, while the first floor has one window on the right. A panelled door leads to the lobby entry, positioned right of center, and is sheltered by a gabled "rustic" porch. There is an additional door in a small extension that is set back to the left, located under the first-floor window. A pentice extension is present on the right side.

Inside, there is a base-cruck truss to the left of center, with struts visible on the rear wall. A collar above connects the crucks, supporting three queen posts. The ceilings and first floor reveal substantial exposed framing, with smoke-blackened timbers in the roof. The interior also features a deep brick fireplace with a bacon loft, making this cottage a rare example of cruck construction in Surrey.
