Description

The hay barn located to the south of Home Farm House is a Grade II* listed structure. The western five bays date back to between 1411 and 1422, while the eastern three bays were added in 1608-1609, likely when the entire barn was re-roofed. It is timber framed, standing on a brick and stone plinth, with weatherboard cladding and plain tiled roofs. The north side features some original oak weatherboarding that is 12 inches wide with splayed joints.

Originally, the barn had a central threshing floor and a cart entrance. The easternmost bay was floored and shows evidence of wattle staves on all four walls. The wall frame includes a mid rail, and most bays retain passing braces, with a total of twelve still surviving. The upright posts maintain all but one curved brace, and a Trait de Jupiter scarf joint is present in the wall plate over the entrance bay.

The original roof was a crownpost design, but it has been replaced with a probable angled queenstrut roof from around 1608-1609, featuring rafters without a ridgepiece, added when the barn was extended by three bays to the east. The eastern three bays also included another threshing floor. Some of the studding from the earlier part of the barn was reused, including passing braces and a former central post from the eastern end. These alterations coincided with the extension of Home Farmhouse into a larger courtyard house with a three-bay addition to the east.
