Description

The Memorial to Major Geoffrey Brooke Parnell, located at Holy Trinity Church on High Street in Guildford, is a First World War memorial created in 1922 by Edith Farmiloe and erected by Messrs Moon and Son.

The memorial features a bronze sculpture of Major Geoffrey Brooke Parnell, depicted as a winged figure in robes that represent him as a saint. The sculpture stands upright on a rectangular stone plinth with a chamfered single-stepped base. It faces west and is positioned near a north-south aligned pathway at the western end of the churchyard.

The sculpture is approximately 1.15 meters high and 0.6 meters wide, showcasing a dignified posture that contrasts with the pale stone plinth, which is 1.5 meters high and 0.7 meters wide. The figure holds a drawn sword in its right hand, resting it on the top of the plinth, while its left hand is clenched at its side.

On the plinth, there is a single west-facing panel inscribed with the following text: "IN LOVING AND/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF GEOFFREY BROOKE/ PARNELL. MAJOR 1ST/ BATTN THE QUEENS/ REGIMENT AND THE/ OFFICERS AND MEN OF/ THE BATTALION WHO/ FELL AT HIGH WOOD/ JULY 15TH 1916 IN THE/ BATTLE OF THE SOMME./ THIS/ MEMORIAL WAS DESIGNED/ ERECTED BY HIS SISTER/ EDITH FARMILOE."
