Description
Woodstock Gate is a triumphal arch built in 1723 by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a keyed semi-circular archway flanked by two orders of Corinthian columns, which are set on a panelled plinth and support an entablature with an inscription on a narrow attic. The rusticated flanking walls are terminated by drum piers and include 18th-century panelled doors set in semi-circular arched doorways, which have lions' heads carved on the keystones. This gateway was created to provide a more convenient entrance for visitors coming from Woodstock. The flanking doors were originally made before 1710 for the garden east of the palace and were relocated to this site in 1773. The builders of the arch were Peisley and Townesend.
