Description

The statue of a lion and horse, located approximately 85 meters north of Rousham Park and at the north end of the bowling green, was created in 1743 by the sculptor Scheemakers. This limestone statue depicts a lion mauling a horse and is set on an ashlar pedestal with a moulded cornice. It is positioned at the top of a grass slope that descends towards the River Cherwell, offering views of two notable structures in Steeple Aston: the Chapel of the Mill and the Ornamental Arch. The statue is part of the landscape gardens designed by William Kent around 1733 to 1740. Rousham Park is recognized in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade I.
