Description
The Cloister and Upper Dormitory, Octagon, and Schoolroom at St. Peter's College in Radley are mid-19th century structures, with significant work completed in 1891 by Sir T.G. Jackson. They are built from Flemish bond brick with terracotta dressings and a string course, topped with a gabled 20th-century tile roof and featuring a brick rear lateral stack. Designed in a late Gothic style, the buildings are two stories high and have a symmetrical nine-window range. The ground floor includes a moulded terracotta doorway and two-light windows with traceried heads and angel stops on the hood moulds, along with offset buttresses and a crenellated parapet.
To the front left, there is a right-angled range with a similar three-window layout and finials on three gables. The left side features a gable end from an older dormitory range built in 1849, which includes a three-storey bay window and two-light windows. The Octagon, constructed in 1859, is made of chequer brick and has a pyramidal 20th-century tile roof. It stands three stories tall, with each face showcasing two trefoil-headed lights above Tudor-style stone-mullioned two-light windows on the ground and first floors.
At the rear of the cloister walk, there are three gabled bays of an early 19th-century brick building that features sash windows and a circular stair turret. A small two-storey wing with pointed windows extends from the back of this building. Additionally, there is a late 16th or early 17th-century barn located at the rear left, constructed with heavy timber framing and brick infill, also topped with a gabled 20th-century tile roof and an eight-bay queen-post roof. This barn was rebuilt with additions in 1848 to create the current schoolroom.
