Description
The garden wall, fernhouse, archway, and gateway located approximately 20 meters northeast of Mapledurham House date from the 17th century, with the archway and gateway likely from the early 18th century, and the fernhouse from the mid-18th century. The garden wall is made of red brick featuring a grey brick diaper pattern. The archway has rubbed brick piers with carved panels and stone swagged finials, along with a segmental arch at the center, topped by a concave-sided brick pediment with stone acorn finials on the sides and a stone case finial in the center. The gateway consists of grey brick with red brick dressings on the piers, which have carved stone tops with ball finials, and features wrought iron gates at the center adorned with armorial bearings on the overthrow. The fernhouse is constructed from banded flint and red brick and includes three Gothick Y-tracery windows. This structure is an important part of the group of garden walls surrounding Mapledurham House.
