Description
The South Park commemoration stone is a Grade II listed structure that honors the preservation of South Park. It was commissioned by the Oxford Preservation Trust and funded by Dr. David and Mrs. Joanna Randall-MacIver. Designed and crafted by Eric Gill in 1932, the stone was erected in 1935. It is situated in a gap in the roadside railings on the western boundary of South Park, on the southeast side of Headington Road, close to the park's entrance.
Made of Portland stone, the stone is a roughly-dressed monolith that stands approximately 3.6 meters high and slightly tapers towards the jagged top. On the northwest (roadside) face, there is a carved inscription on an ashlar panel that reads: ‘This park was/acquired by the/ Oxford/ Preservation Trust through/ the liberality/ of the/Pilgrim Trust/ and David/ and Joanna/ Randall-MacIver/ 1932’. The words 'Oxford' and the date '1932' are displayed in a larger font size.
