Description
The Emily Thomas Building at Corpus Christi College in Oxford is a Grade II listed structure built between 1927 and 1928 by T.H. Hughes of Glasgow. This building serves as undergraduates' rooms and is constructed from ashlar stone with a stone tile roof featuring coped gable ends, obelisk finials, and parapets. It has ashlar axial stacks with grouped shafts that have moulded bases and caps.
The building has an L-shaped plan and is located at the northeast corner of Corpus Christi College. It showcases a Collegiate Tudor style and consists of two storeys. The asymmetrical west front faces the court and features three to four bays, with gables on both the left and right. The left side includes a projecting wing with a slightly advanced two-storey bay adorned with corbel heads in the cornice. To the right, there is a porch with a Tudor arch doorway and an oriel window above, where the lower panels are richly decorated. The parapet displays an armorial device and the date 1928. The centre has a six-light window, while a four-light window is located on the right under the gable, all featuring four-centred arch lights.
On the north elevation, the left gable has a shallow two-storey canted bay with a crenellated cornice supported by angel corbels, four-centred arch lights, carved arms, and the date. There are two windows to the right. The east elevation has six bays, each containing two 2-light windows with four-centred arch lights. The building features metal window frames, some with iron grilles, and lead drain pipes with moulded rainwater heads and carved stone spouts.
Inside, there is a timber newel staircase with turned balusters and square newels topped with tall finials.
