Description
135 High Street is an early 18th-century house and modern shops. The front is stuccoed over a timber frame and sits above cellars. The roof is covered in Welsh slate and has three gabled dormers. There is an overhang at the first floor, and a heavy, moulded modillioned cornice. The house has three sash windows. The interior includes 18th-century panelling in rooms on the first and second floors. The house was once known as Hore's tenement. Historical records indicate that Elinor Sylvester suffered a fire here in 1679 and subsequently rebuilt. The core of the present house may or may not be that of the 1679 building. The University of Oxford acquired the property in 1947. The building forms part of a group of listed buildings on the South Side.
