Description
The war memorial at St Margaret's Church was dedicated in 1920, and the designer is unknown. It is located on the edge of the churchyard, prominently positioned at the corner of St Margaret's Road, making it highly visible from the street. The memorial features a Calvary with a figure of Christ on a stone plinth, beneath which is a bronze plaque inscribed with the words "JESU MERCY." This is topped by a half-dome, and at the back, there is a low semi-circular limestone wall that holds copper plates inscribed with the texts: (1) "THEY LOVED NOT/THEIR LIVES UNTO DEATH" (Revelations 12.11) and (2) "FOR KING & COUNTRY 1914-1918," followed by the names of 47 men listed in alphabetical order without additional details. During a visit in June 2007, it was noted that one of the principal uprights had some strapping that was rotten.
The memorial was dedicated on 24 July 1920, and the cast-iron figure of Christ was produced by Lucy's Engineering Works in nearby Jericho, part of a batch of 200 castings likely intended for similar memorials. The memorial holds significant historical and cultural value as it honors the war dead of the parish and serves as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen.
