Description

This building, located at 1 South Parks Road, is a house that now serves as offices for the University of Oxford. It was constructed between 1868 and 1869 by the architect William Wilkinson for John C. Wilson. The house is made of buff brick with red brick dressings and features a plain-tile roof with various elaborate ridge and end stacks. It is designed in a High Victorian style, characterized by string courses and predominantly stone mullion windows with sashes.

The building has a central entrance plan and consists of two storeys and an attic. The front elevation has a picturesque outline, featuring a central range with a lower roof and gabled cross-wings on either side. There is a five-window range across the front at the first floor, with the central range showcasing an elaborate gabled wooden porch and flanked by windows. Above, there are three windows, and two gabled dormers are positioned on the long roof slope.

The left cross-wing has a canted bay with a two-light window above and a three-light window in the attic. The right gable features a three-light window with a two-light window above and another three-light window in the attic. A single-storey gabled service wing projects forward on the right side, culminating in a pyramidal roof with a finial behind it. There is also a further gable and sashes at the rear. The left side includes a side stack that slightly projects along the wall.

The rear of the building is similar to the front, with a four-gabled elevation featuring mainly two- and three-light stone mullion windows with sashes. Inside, the house retains good original joinery, including the staircase and stone fireplaces. This property is a finely detailed example of a suburban villa from the period, designed by a well-known architect. It is part of a notable group of historic buildings, including the adjacent No. 2 and Rhodes House located opposite.
