Description

37 and 38 High Street is a house with a modern shop, dating from the 16th to 17th century. The building is two stories tall and features stuccoed timber framing, two gabled dormers, a new stone slate roof, and brick stacks. On the first floor, there are two three-sided bay windows with modern 18th-century style sashes. The gabled dormer windows are modern and have five-light casements, supported by ancient carved wooden brackets adorned with Tudor-style blank shields. The moulded wood lintel of the west gabled dormer window is also ancient.

Inside, the building includes 18th-century panelling and doors. The ground floor of No 38 has plastered beams, while the rear wing contains a fireplace and a plastered, ornamented beam. Historical records indicate that there were leases and tenants from 1569 to 1865, and some building work was occurring in 1664 when it was known as The Inn. A plan from around 1725 is also referenced.

All the listed buildings on the north side of High Street form a group.
