Description
A pair of cottages dating from the late 19th century, built for the Somerhill Estate and forming a group with Nos 1-4 Crockhurst Street Cottages opposite. The cottages are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with decorative burnt headers and buff-yellow bricks used for corners, window surrounds, and extensively within the chimney shafts to resemble quoins. They have brick stacks with projecting bands and large, shared chimneyshafts. The roof is covered in red tiles.
The cottages face east, with No 1 on the right (north) and No 2 on the left (south). Each cottage has a mirror-image plan and an L-shape, comprising a main block with an inner room and projecting crosswing rooms at each end. Axial stacks serve back-to-back fireplaces, and entrances are through porches situated towards the rear of the crosswings.
The cottages are two storeys high, with a symmetrical 1:2:1-window front. They feature late 19th and 20th-century replacement casement windows with glazing bars, all with low brick segmental arches above, except for the two first-floor central windows, which are set beneath gables. Gabled porches project from each end, featuring elliptical-headed front arches with gables and original doors with herringbone plank patterns. All gables retain original wavy bargeboards. The interior was not inspected.
