Description

Crockhurst Street Cottages is a row of four cottages built in the late 19th century. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with cream-colored bricks used decoratively on the corners, doorways, windows, and extensively on the chimney shafts. The cottages feature brick stacks and large staggered chimney shafts, topped with a red tile roof.

The cottages face west and are numbered 1 to 4 from left (north) to right (south). Each cottage has a one-room plan with the front doorway, entrance hall, and staircase positioned to one side. The two middle cottages (Nos 2 and 3) have doorways that face each other, while the end cottages (Nos 1 and 4) have doorways at the ends. The middle cottages are slightly set forward from the outer ones. There are axial stacks between Nos 1 and 2 and Nos 3 and 4, serving back-to-back fireplaces.

The cottages are two storeys tall, with small single-storey bakehouses attached to each end, both connected to the end cottages in the 20th century. The exterior features a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with a 1:2:1 pattern of late 19th-century casements that include glazing bars, all topped with low segmental brick arches. The doorways also have low segmental arches and contain original plain plank doors behind gabled porches with trellis sides and wavy bargeboards. The paired doorways of the middle cottages share a single larger porch, and the main roof is gable-ended.

These cottages were built for the Somerhill estate and are notable for their completeness as late 19th-century structures. They form a group with Nos 1 and 2 Crockhurst Farm Cottages located opposite.
