Description
Buckhurst Bridge, located on Buckhurst Road in Frittenden, dates from the early 19th century and possibly earlier. It is constructed of red brick and sandstone. The bridge features two round brick arches that span the stream, with the western arch (on the Frittenden bank) having sandstone blocks at its base and brickwork partly in English Bond. There is also a secondary overflow culvert on the western bank. An offset brick cut-water is present on the upstream (southern) face. The parapets are approximately 3½ feet high, with part of them rendered and iron ties on the outer face, while the terminal piers are slightly splayed outwards. Some remnants of stone revetment can be seen on the stream banks, particularly downstream. The Hammer stream at this location serves as the boundary between the civil parishes of Frittenden and Biddenden, with the bridge partly situated in the latter parish.
