Description

The former stables, located approximately 60 metres south of Badsell Manor Farmhouse, is a building that dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and was converted into a house around 1986. The front of the building features late 16th century to early 17th century brickwork, constructed in English bond red brick with a decorative diaper pattern of burnt headers. The east end has been rebuilt in 20th century brick, while the remainder of the structure is timber-framed and covered with weatherboards, topped with a peg-tile roof.

The stable block faces north-north-east, with its back against the road. Its internal layout has been altered due to the conversion into a house, but it has always been two storeys high, originally featuring a hay loft above the stalls. The exterior displays an irregular two-window front with 20th century casements that lack glazing bars. There are two ground floor doorways and two former hayloft loading hatch doorways, likely in their original positions, now fitted with mostly part-glazed 20th century plank doors. The extreme right end of the front wall is weatherboarded, while the rest is brick. The left half was rebuilt around 1986 and faced with original bricks to match the surviving original work on the right. A chamfered plinth is present, and the roof is gable-ended.

The interior has not been inspected, but reports indicate the existence of a curious underground chamber made of brick with a barrel-vaulted roof.
