Description

The Former Prince of Wales Public House is a building that likely dates from the early 19th century, with later 19th and 20th-century extensions and modernizations. The main structure features timber framing covered in painted weatherboards, resting on brick footings, with brick stacks and chimney shafts, and a peg-tile roof.

The building has a T-shaped plan, with the main block oriented north along the street. Originally designed with two rooms and a central cross passage, the interior has been altered to create a larger bar area by removing the partitions. A one-room plan rear block extends at right angles from the center, accompanied by single-storey outshots on either side, giving the ground plan a rectangular shape. The main stack is located at the junction of the two blocks, with 20th-century extensions added to the rear.

The exterior features a symmetrical two-window front. The first-floor windows are 16-pane sashes, while the ground floor includes canted bay windows supported by Gothick cast iron corner posts, with front 12-pane sashes and side eight-pane sashes. A monopitch roof over the bays extends as a shallow pent roof across the entire front. The central doorway has a part-glazed plank door, and the roof is hipped at both ends. The other windows around the building are 20th-century casements, most of which have glazing bars.

Inside, the building primarily reflects various 20th-century modernizations, and the roof was not inspected. This former public house is particularly attractive and is part of a group of listed buildings at the western approach to Hadlow.
