Description

This is a group of six headstones located approximately 4 metres south of the nave of the Church of St Mary in Hadlow. The headstones date from between 1718 and 1781 and commemorate members of the Kipping family. They are made of sandstone and are upright slabs with variously shaped heads, standing between approximately 800mm and 1.3m high. All the headstones face east and feature inscriptions in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The group consists of two rows of three headstones.

In the front row, the leftmost headstone has a low relief carving depicting a biblical or allegorical scene. It shows a bearded figure holding a spade, with one arm raised in resolve against a kneeling woman. To the left, a mother holds a baby with two crosses behind, and to the right, another figure holds a shroud. The inscription, starting in Gothic lettering and including some italics, records the deaths of Henry Kipping and his wife Grace in 1781, along with their daughters Grace (1775) and Sarah (1767).

The centre headstone in the front row is in memory of William Kipping (died 1781) and features a carving of a winged cherub's head amidst flowing foliage. The rightmost headstone in the front row commemorates Mary Kipping (died 1777) and is carved with children reading books.

The back row headstones all have curvilinear shaped heads with recessed panels. The left one has projected scrolled ears and records the death of 17-year-old John Kipping in 1732. The middle headstone is small and narrow, commemorating six-year-old Ann Kipping (died 1718). The right headstone has a double head and is barely legible, but it includes the name of John Kipping (died 1734) along with references to his wife and daughter.
