Description
The Rodger chest tomb, located approximately 2 meters west of the tower of the Church of St Mary in Hadlow, is a large chest tomb dated 1882 in memory of Robert Rodger. It is made of white marble set on a limestone and brick plinth and is designed in the Gothick style. The chest features panelled sides, with three panels on the long sides and one on each end, all of which are cusped with sunk spandrels at the corners. The thick lid has a ridged top adorned with a fleuree cross, along with moulded edges and a cornice. The base is moulded above a band of cusped trefoils and sits on a single step plinth built on brick foundations. The east end of the base displays a coat of arms, and there is an inscription panel above it made of inlaid lead, commemorating the deaths of Robert Rodger of Hadlow Castle in 1882 and his wife Sophia in 1884. The tomb is surrounded by coping stones that contain sockets for iron area railings.
