Description
The Simmons chest tomb, located approximately 2.5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1802 in memory of William Simmons. It is made of white marble set on a granite plinth. The chest features reeded corner pilasters, with each long side displaying a circular plaque that stands proud within a moulded frame, adorned with swags of nut-and-husk. The flat lid has moulded edges and a moulded base, resting on a two-step granite plinth. The northern plaque is inscribed in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of William Simmons in 1802, while the southern plaque commemorates Ann Simmons, who died in 1823.
