Description
The Wateringbury War Memorial Cross is a granite memorial located at the edge of the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is listed as Grade II. It is situated near a group of other monuments that are also listed as Grade II and Grade II.
The memorial cross features a tapering plinth with convex sides, raised on a four-stepped square base made of a different stone. The plain cross shaft, which is rectangular in section, has an incised outline on the front face and rises to a wheel-head cross. This cross is designed in a Celtic style and is adorned with an interlace pattern carved in low relief, along with a central hemispherical boss at the center of the cross arms. The entire structure stands approximately 4 metres high.
The plinth is inscribed with the dates 1914 - 1918 and 1939 - 1945, which are incised into the stone. This inscription is the only text on the memorial, as the names of the fallen are recorded on two separate plaques inside the church.
