Description

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is a Grade II* listed parish church located on the north side of Tonbridge Road in Wateringbury. This late medieval structure features a 13th-century tower and chancel, along with a nave flanked by north and south aisles. The west tower is rendered and topped with a shingled spire, which was rebuilt in 1886. The nave, originally from the 15th century, was reconstructed by Joseph Clarke, who also added the south aisle in 1856. The north aisle was completed by W O Milne in 1883-84. The church is built of ragstone with Bath stone dressings and has slate roofs. Notable architectural features include two tall three-light perpendicular windows that remain as the west windows of the aisles, and an old roof in the nave supported by tie-beams resting on stone demi-angels. The chancel, dating back to the 13th century, has windows that were inserted in the 15th century. A gabled 15th-century porch leads to the entrance. Inside, there is a tomb with marble double Ionic columns supporting segmental hoods, dated 1628, dedicated to Olyver Style, who died in 1622.
