Description

This is a row of eight Hodsoll headstones located approximately 400mm east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary in Hadlow. The headstones date from 1711 to 1778 and commemorate members of the Hodsoll family. They are made of sandstone, feature shaped heads, and vary in height from 300mm to 750mm. The inscriptions are in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering.

The tallest headstone, positioned at the left end, has a curvilinear-shaped double head and a recessed front panel. Its inscription, which includes some italic lettering, is divided into columns for Reuben Hodsoll (died 1711) and his wife Ann (died 1741). Adjacent to this is another headstone that features a coat of arms carved on the head. This inscription, presented in large letters, records the deaths of Henry and Elizabeth, who died in 1741 and 1732 respectively. The remaining headstones also have curvilinear-shaped heads and recessed front panels, although some inscriptions are now illegible.
