Description

Hartlake Barn is a house that was originally a threshing barn, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, and converted around 1976. It features a weatherboarded timber frame on brick footings, which were replaced during the conversion, and has a peg-tile roof.

The barn was transformed into a two-room plan house with a central entrance hall and staircase. It faces north-north-east. The front doorway is set in a recess that spans the width of the former barn doorway. At the rear, the roof extends over an open-fronted outshot that likely contains a couple of rooms and was probably built in the 19th century. To the right, there is a small single-storey building that is part of the house, with its previous agricultural use unknown, likely dating from the 19th century as well. Originally, the barn was open to the roof, and the house is now two storeys tall.

The exterior features a symmetrical three-window front with timber casements from around 1976, which do not have glazing bars. The front doorway is flanked by small windows and has a 20th-century plank door. The roof is hipped at both ends. At the rear, the roof continues over the outshot, supported by a four-bay arcade of plain timber posts with straight up-braces.

Inside, much of the layout is a result of the 1976 conversion, but some of the original framing is exposed on the first floor, and the roof structure remains intact. It consists of four bays, with tie-beam trusses supported by large wall posts featuring formed jowls and straight arch braces. There are two queen posts between each tie and collar, and the trusses support staggered butt purlins.
